The announcement was made at a special meeting on Sudan in the UN Security Council on Thursday, with the US and Foreign Minister Antony Blinken as host.
So far, the US has pledged over 25 billion kronor to efforts to support those affected by the brutal civil war between Sudan's army and the paramilitary movement Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
We see too many people in Sudan suffering from hunger, from despair, said Blinken in the UN Security Council.
He emphasized that attempts to achieve democratic change in Sudan have failed, and that the warring parties have created "the worst humanitarian crisis in the world" currently.
The civil war in Sudan has claimed a large number of civilian casualties. Official estimates suggest that thousands of civilians have been killed and over eleven million inhabitants forced to flee.
However, independent estimates from, among others, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) in November, indicate that over 61,000 people have been killed due to the civil war alone in the state of Khartum.
