Major U.S. stock indexes rose on Wednesday after two statements by President Donald Trump, one about Greenland and the other about withdrawing punitive tariffs.

The broad S&P 500 index, the Dow Jones industrial average, and the Nasdaq composite index all rose 1.2 percent.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump said that the United States will not use force to take over Greenland. The indices immediately reacted positively.

And a few hours later, the American president wrote on his Truth Social platform that the announced punitive tariffs against a number of European countries would be withdrawn - according to Trump, as a result of a "framework agreement" being reached between the U.S. and NATO on the future of Greenland. The rise on Wall Street strengthened.

Among the winners was oil services company Halliburton, up 4.1 percent, after the company reported higher-than-expected profits last quarter.
