"We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Victor Willis, lead singer of the Village People. Victor passed away on Monday, June 30, 2026 after a short but aggressive illness. We ask that you may mourn in peace," the band writes on its official Facebook page.
Willis was instrumental in starting the group along with French producers Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo.
He was instrumental in the group's early identity, setting the tone for its mix of disco, theater and distinct roles. The group became internationally famous in the 1970s by performing dressed as stereotypical macho characters. Willis played, among others, a policeman and a naval officer.
Willis provided lead vocals on several of the group's biggest international hits, including "YMCA" and "In the Navy," songs that became global cultural phenomena. His voice became strongly associated with the group's brand and its instantly recognizable sound.
Willis was 74.
