From one world champion to another. This is the crisis club Genoa's choice, which has appointed French Patrick Vieira as a replacement for the recently sacked Italian coach Alberto Gilardino.
48-year-old Vieira, who played for Inter, Juventus, and Milan, among others, began his coaching career in Manchester City's academy team and has since had the main responsibility in New York City, Nice, Crystal Palace, and Strasbourg.
Now he takes over a team that has had a tough start to the season. Genoa has 10 points after 12 matches and is a bottom team in the table.
The Frenchman's first task will be at home against bottom rival Cagliari on Saturday.
Gilardino, who took over Genoa in December 2022, won World Championship gold with Italy in 2006. Vieira lifted the same trophy on home soil in 1998.
