Judging by the available evidence, it was the United States that carried out the high-profile attack in the city of Minab on February 28, reports the investigative news site Bellingcat and The New York Times.
The facility belongs to Iran's Revolutionary Guard, but there was also an elementary school for girls there. Around 175 people, the vast majority of them children, were killed, according to the difficult-to-verify reports that have come in so far.
More indications
The short clip that has been reviewed was first published by the Iranian news agency Mehr. It has been located and verified. It appears to be a Tomahawk strike, and in this conflict only the United States has such missiles.
The US military recently released a clip showing Tomahawk missiles being fired from a warship at sea, and that clip was recorded on February 28, The New York Times notes.
At a press conference on Wednesday, US General Dan Caine brought a map to show where the US had targeted its latest waves of strikes. It was clear that one such area was Minab, which is close to the sensitive Strait of Hormuz in southern Iran.
Blamed on Iran
US President Donald Trump was asked about the attack on Saturday and denied the reports.
"In my opinion, based on what I've seen, it was done by Iran," he told a press briefing aboard the presidential plane.
At that point, satellite images, media reports, expert assessments and other sources had increasingly begun to place the blame on the United States.
American sources also told Reuters that it is considered likely the US military fired the missile, but they have expressed some reservations about the new information emerging.
