Vattenfall's Record Power Grid Investment May Lead to Higher Fees

State-owned Vattenfall is making a record investment in the expansion of the power grid. And it's likely that customers will have to foot the bill in the form of continued price increases. It needs to be financed over time, says Annika Viklund, CEO of Vattenfall Eldistribution.

40 billion kronor will be invested in new power grids, but also in upgrading the old ones over the next five years, according to Vattenfall. This is more than a doubled annual rate compared to a few years ago.

This will be the largest investments ever in the power grid, says Annika Viklund.

This is about more wind and solar energy being connected, more charging infrastructure and the industry's increased need for more electricity. The industry accounts for about a third of the increased power grid, the total investments in the coming years, according to Viklund.

Many feel anxious

Why should I, as a villa or apartment customer, get such a higher power grid fee?

This is a good question, and an anxiety many customers feel, says Annika Viklund and explains how laws and regulations are connected, and how the power grid has changed over time.

You pay for your place, with a general improvement for the entire power grid in Sweden, we help each other with that.

On Wednesday, new statistics were released from the so-called Nils Holgersson group, which showed that power grid fees are increasing record much this year, around ten percent on average. And seen over time, the grid fees have increased significantly.

"No small talk"

Is that why you're telling us about these record-large investments again?

We also think it's important to tell our customers and the surrounding world. It's not just talk that we're investing, but now we're also showing numbers that this is really a new level, says Viklund.

Will there be continued large fee increases?

We have no decisions on that... It's clear that you need to see that it's financed over time, says she.

The power grid companies in general have received criticism from the supervisory authority, the Energy Market Inspectorate, that the fee increases have not gone to grid investments to the extent that the companies have stated. Vattenfall Distribution has also previously years shifted many billions of profit, group contribution, further to the parent company, which suggests that the power grid company has had too much money in the bank.

But the years ahead, I can guarantee that we'll use every single krona we get, to be able to continue investing in this way, says Annika Viklund.
