If we have the timelines we're following now, it's somewhere around 2029/2030, says Desirée Comstedt, responsible for the development of new nuclear power at Vattenfall, to Svenska Dagbladet, SvD.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) has stated that a reactor should start being built before the election in September 2026.

We need to ensure that we have the right information in place before we start building, says Comstedt.

Vattenfall, which has already identified a geographical location, at Ringhals in Halland, is looking at two different alternatives: Two large-scale or three to five small modular reactors.

The first alternative may periodically require around 10,000 people for the construction, the second 3,500. Accommodation, transportation, and possibly schools need to be arranged. In addition to the project's costs, it also needs to be clarified how the risk sharing with the state will look. All permits from the Radiation Safety Authority and the Land and Environment Court must also be in place before an investment decision can be made.

Comstedt, however, believes that it's possible to know earlier than 2029/30 if the calculation adds up.

The government's goal is new nuclear power with an effect of at least 2,500 megawatts, equivalent to two large reactors by 2035.

Comstedt believes it's possible to have a first reactor in operation by 2035.
