In a statement from the US Department of State, Antony Blinken states that RSF has "systematically" murdered men and boys and raped women and girls belonging to specific ethnic groups.
The US is simultaneously imposing sanctions on RSF's leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo "for the systematic genocide that the Sudanese people have been subjected to". The sanctions are being implemented by the US Department of the Treasury.
The number of civilians killed and affected in the ongoing civil war in Sudan between the country's army and RSF is countless. Estimates suggest that there are tens of thousands – likely over 60,000 – fatalities.
After 20 months of civil strife, it is estimated that over 30 million of the country's inhabitants are in need of acute assistance. Half of them are children.
Furthermore, eight million inhabitants are internally displaced, which is the largest number of internally displaced persons in a crisis currently in the world.
In addition to sanctions against RSF's leader Dagalo – also known as Hemedti – the US Department of the Treasury is imposing sanctions on another person and seven companies with ties to RSF.
