U.S. chargé d'affaires Laura Dogu has arrived in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, with the aim of reopening the U.S. mission in the country.

Seven years ago, the United States closed its embassy in Caracas at the behest of then-Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. But since Maduro was captured earlier this year, both countries have expressed a need to improve their relations.

On Saturday, Dogu arrived in the Venezuelan capital.

“My team and I are ready to work,” she said in a post published by the embassy on X.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil writes in a post on Telegram that Dogu's arrival in the country is part of a joint plan to "manage and resolve existing differences through diplomatic dialogue."

A chargé d'affaires is the head of a diplomatic mission in the absence of a full ambassador.
