The White House proposes stricter rules regarding student and journalist visas. International students have "exploited the US's generosity", claims the Trump administration.

Visas issued to international students and journalists will henceforth be time-limited, according to the new proposal.

Students will be allowed to stay for a maximum of four years, while the maximum time for journalists will be 240 days. However, there will be certain opportunities for extensions.

If the proposal becomes a reality, the number of foreign citizens who choose to study in the USA is expected to decrease significantly.

"For far too long, previous governments have allowed foreign students and other visa holders to stay in the USA for almost indefinite periods. They pose a security risk, take countless amounts of taxpayers' money and disadvantage American citizens," states the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Four years is likely to be insufficient for many international students, reports Forbes. According to American statistics, it takes students in the country an average of 4.3 years to complete a bachelor's degree, and an average of 5.7 years to earn a doctorate.

The Trump administration's tough crackdown on migrants has already caused the number of international students to the USA to decrease sharply, writes Forbes.
