The US State Department will remove al-Sharaa as well as Syrian Interior Minister Anas Hasan Khattab from its list of terrorists subject to US government sanctions.
"The adoption of this resolution sends a strong political signal that further recognizes Syria's transition to a new chapter," said US State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott in a statement.
Ahmad al-Sharaa has been on the list since 2013. He previously led the al-Qaeda-linked Islamist movement Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which overthrew Syria's long-time dictator Bashar al-Assad in December last year. HTS has since been officially dissolved and many of its members have been incorporated into the new state apparatus.
On Monday, al-Sharaa will visit the White House, as the first Syrian leader since the country's independence in 1946. During the visit, he will sign an agreement to join Syria in the US-led global coalition against the terrorist movement ISIS.
The other day, the UN Security Council also voted in favor of a resolution to lift sanctions against al-Sharaa.
