It was an unusual and symbolic vote, according to the AP news agency, as six Republicans went against Trump's wishes and voted with the Democrats. The vote ended 219-211 in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
“Republicans in the House or Senate who vote against tariffs will face serious consequences come election time, and that includes the primaries,” Trump threatened on Truth Social.
For the tariffs against Canada to be effectively abolished, they need to be approved by the Senate, but even then the president can veto them unless the measure is supported by a two-thirds majority.
