US-Ukraine Military Intel Pause: Temporary or Strategic Shift?

The USA stops sharing military information with Ukraine, claims CIA chief John Ratcliffe. But the signals are mixed. President Trump's security adviser says that the previously discontinued arms support may soon be resumed, and sources in Kyiv say that intelligence is still coming from the USA.

Ratcliffe confirms earlier media reports that all military intelligence cooperation between the US and Ukraine has ceased, reports Fox News.

However, international media sources in Kyiv are not as definitive. According to Sky News sources, the stop appears to be "selective", and some information is still coming through.

Speculations continue

The reports come after the announcement earlier in the week about halted weapons deliveries to Ukraine. Since then, there has been speculation about whether the Trump administration's increasingly frosty attitude towards Ukraine would also spread to military intelligence.

Ratcliffe says at the same time that the pause, both in terms of military support and intelligence, is temporary and that he expects the US to "work shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine" again in the future.

Mike Waltz, security adviser to President Donald Trump, also gives positive signals in an interview with Fox News. Waltz says he is in intense contact with the Ukrainians regarding peace talks.

I believe that if we can nail down these negotiations, move towards these negotiations, and actually put confidence-building measures on the table – then the President will take a serious look at lifting the pause, says Waltz.

Immediate effects

While the weapons stockpiles will last for a while, the broken communication may have more immediate effects. The intelligence cooperation is described as crucial in many cases for Ukraine's ability to find and hit targets as the country defends itself against Russia.

According to Financial Times sources, the US has nevertheless continued to send military information about Russia and Ukraine to other allies such as the UK.

Trump has, in connection with and after a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday, accused the attacked country of not being willing to seek peace.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party) has difficulty commenting on the reports that the US has stopped intelligence information to Ukraine.

If it's true, it could be serious. It depends on what intelligence information is not coming, he says to TT.

On the other hand, there is information that suggests the US is considering resuming some weapons deliveries to Ukraine.
