Ten of the 25 crew members on the cargo ship Eternity C, which sank yesterday in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen, have been rescued. At the same time, the USA says that those who are missing may have been "kidnapped".

The US Embassy in Yemen – which for about a decade has had its operations in Saudi Arabia – writes on X that surviving crew members may have been taken captive by the Houthis.

"We demand their immediate and unconditional release," the embassy writes.

The ship was attacked on Monday and the Iran-backed Houthi movement took responsibility for the attack yesterday. Three people from the crew were killed and the attack is considered the most serious one carried out by the movement on the important shipping route.

Eternity C was on its way north towards the Suez Canal when it was fired upon by people in small boats and with bomb-carrying drones, according to the EU naval operation that combats pirates in the region.

Just days before, the Houthi movement sank another ship in the Red Sea and between November 2023 and December 2024, more than 100 ships were attacked with rockets and drones by the movement, in what it says is to support the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
