US Car Tariffs Threaten Swedish Auto Industry, Warns Dousa

The President of the USA, Donald Trump, is introducing 25-percent tariffs on all vehicles and vehicle components manufactured outside the USA from April 3 and May 3, respectively. We want to avoid such a scenario, says Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa (The Moderate Party).

Benjamin Dousa says that the tariffs on vehicles risk hitting Sweden hard since the USA is an important market for the Swedish automotive sector.

This message is a clear escalation from the USA's side, he says.

Dousa means that Sweden and the EU will continue to hold dialogue with the American administration to avoid further escalation.

We want to avoid such a scenario and have made proposals in the talks. But so far, they have not been met with particularly great American interest, says Benjamin Dousa.

If the message about the tariffs is upheld, he means that the EU will be forced to respond.

Then we must introduce tariffs against the USA, and it will be on products where there are plenty of alternatives and where we are not entirely dependent on an American supplier.

He sees the ongoing development as alarming and means that one should take Donald Trump's statements seriously.

One wakes up to new messages every other day, but I still think one should take the words seriously. We can already see that the market is negatively affected by the unpredictability itself.

Corrected version. Now with the correct date for when the tariffs will take effect.
