The Pentagon's latest estimate is $4 billion above the amount that the country's Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, gave during a House of Representatives hearing at the end of April.
It was $25 billion then. But the staff and the economists are constantly looking at new estimates, and we think it's closer to $29 now, says Pentagon finance chief Jules Hurst III about the discrepancy.
The new amount came in connection with a hearing on the Pentagon's budget requests.
The war began on February 28 when the US and Israel jointly attacked Iran. For just over a month now, there has been a fragile ceasefire between the parties.
