The war that has been going on since 2023 between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has killed tens of thousands, over 13 million people have been forced to flee and the UN has previously called it the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
Both sides have committed serious crimes against human rights, says Virginia Gamba, acting special adviser to the UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the prevention of genocide, to the UN Human Rights Council on Monday.
However, she specifically points out the RSF's and its allied Arab militias' continued "ethnically motivated attacks on the Zaghawa, Masalit and Fur groups".
The risk of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in Sudan continues to be very high, says Virginia Gamba.
