Paramilitary RSF has taken control of the camp after intense fighting against the Sudanese military in recent weeks. Around 150,000 refugees have sought refuge in the city of al-Fashir, the last major city in greater Darfur not under RSF control. An additional 181,000 refugees have headed towards the city of Tawila in northern Darfur.
Ocha has warned that aid workers do not have the opportunity to help the hundreds of thousands of refugees, and Unicef describes al-Fashir and its surroundings as "hell on earth".
The war in Sudan broke out in April 2023 between RSF and government forces. More than 14 million people have been displaced and mass famine and enormous humanitarian needs have followed in the wake of the war.
