La Niña, which has a cooling effect on parts of the Pacific Ocean, is expected to return in the autumn. WMO estimates that there is about a 55 percent probability that La Niña will develop from September to November, and about a 60 percent probability that it will occur from October to December.
Temperatures for the period from September to November are still expected to be above normal on large parts of both the northern and southern hemispheres, despite La Niña's cooling effect, according to WMO.
La Niña is a naturally occurring weather phenomenon that affects winds, precipitation, and temperatures worldwide. It often has the opposite effect compared to the warming El Niño.
