The UN is investing heavily to get hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren in war-torn Gaza back to school.

Nearly 90 percent of Gaza's schools have been destroyed following Hamas's terrorist attack on Israel in October 2023 and the subsequent war in the Gaza Strip.

Around 700,000 schoolchildren have not received an education since then, according to the UN agency UNICEF.

The UN is now embarking on a major initiative: 135,400 children are currently attending 110 makeshift school buildings in Gaza. According to UN spokesman James Elder, 336,000 children will receive an education this year - with the goal of all children being able to attend school by 2027.

UNICEF is working with the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA. According to Elder, $86 million is needed - which is equivalent to what the world's population "spends on a cup of coffee for an hour or two."
