The resolution also demands that the hostages be released and that emergency food and food reach Gaza.

The result in the General Assembly has great moral value, but less real. A similar resolution was taken up by the UN's powerful Security Council, but there the USA exercised its veto and the resolution was thus rejected.

149 countries voted for the resolution of the General Assembly's 193 member countries. 12 countries voted against and 19 countries abstained from voting.

The resolution proposal was presented by Spain, and the resolution "strongly condemns the use of famine among civilians as warfare".

Sweden was one of the co-proposers of the resolution.

"With the resolution, we demand an immediate and permanent ceasefire and that humanitarian aid reaches the population in Gaza," writes Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard in a comment after the vote.
