UN Secretary-General António Guterres was in Beirut on Friday to mark the United Nations' presence in the ongoing conflict.

Guterres called on Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement to "end the war" by imposing a ceasefire.

Over 800,000

"The time for armed groups is over. Now is the time for strong states," Guterres said.

He called on the outside world to immediately support the over 800,000 residents of Lebanon who have reportedly fled their homes and been registered as refugees.

Guterres also appealed to the world to raise $325 million - equivalent to just over 3 billion kronor - to support "the people of Lebanon."

The support “will maintain and expand life-saving interventions over the next three months – and include food, clean water, health interventions, education, protection and other critical interventions,” Guterres said.

Lebanon's Health Ministry announced on Friday that the death toll has risen to 773 people since the attacks began on March 2. Of these, more than 100 are children.

The Israeli military announced on Friday afternoon that it had attacked 200 rocket launchers or associated sites. In addition, raids have been carried out against 35 command centers for Hezbollah's military operations.

At the same time, the Norwegian Refugee Council estimates that Israel's calls for complete and immediate evacuation apply to around 14 percent of Lebanon's land area, according to AFP.

“New wave”

At least eight people have been killed in Israeli strikes on a village in southern Lebanon. Another nine people were injured when a building was hit in the town of al-Miya wa-Miya near the port city of Sidon.

The attack came just hours after Israel launched what the military called a “new wave” of attacks and promised “forceful action” against the Shiite militia Hezbollah. Remaining residents in southern Lebanon have been urged to leave their homes.

The long-running conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah has escalated since late February.
