Victoria Amelina was in the middle of writing the book ”Looking at women looking at war” when she was killed in a Russian missile attack in Ukrainian Kramatorsk in July 2023.

The book, which was her first non-fiction, documents testimonies from Ukrainian women who fought against Russia, including a soldier and a human rights activist.

The prize was received by Amelina's husband who announced that the prize amount of 3,000 pounds, equivalent to just under 39,000 kronor, will go to the literature festival she founded in her hometown of New York in Donetsk.

After her death, a group of authors compiled Amelina's material, which was 60 percent complete, into a readable final version with her fragments and notes.

In addition to Amelina, the Irish author Donal Ryan was also awarded the prize for the book ”Heart, be at peace” which takes place in the Irish countryside.
