The crisis-ridden and corruption-ridden energy sector in Ukraine will be reviewed and changed, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has promised after last week's scandals forced the removal of two leading ministers.

The state-owned energy companies were hit by domestic political scandals when Ukraine's bribery investigators claimed that nearly 950 million kronor had been embezzled from the companies. In connection with the revelations, Zelensky called for both Justice Minister Herman Halushchenko and Energy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko to resign, which they did.

“We are at the beginning of a review of key state-owned companies in the energy sector,” Zelenskyy wrote on X on Saturday, continuing:

"In addition to a complete audit of financial operations, the management of these companies will be renewed."

Ukrainian energy systems are severely damaged by repeated and intense Russian attacks in the full-scale offensive war against Ukraine. Daily, long power outages affect large parts of the country.

Zelensky also promised full transparency in the energy sector, as well as cooperation with judicial authorities and anti-corruption investigators.
