Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelenskyj hopes that the parties will discuss the release of prisoners and the abduction of Ukrainian children during the meeting in Turkey. Zelenskyj also hopes that they will discuss a future meeting between him and Russia's leader Vladimir Putin.
The Kremlin, on its part, said on Tuesday that it does not expect any "miraculous breakthroughs." The countries have "diametrically opposite" views and an agreement on a ceasefire is very far away.
During talks in Istanbul last month, Russia presented a list of tough demands, including that Ukraine should relinquish more territory and reject all forms of Western military support. Ukraine dismissed the demands as unacceptable.
Moscow has said that "much work" remains to be done before any discussions can even be held about a possible meeting between Putin and Zelenskyj, who last met in 2019.
