Russia also proposed to return the bodies of 3,000 deceased Ukrainian soldiers. In addition, the country offered a ceasefire for one to two days.

Regarding the path to peace, the parties are "quite far" from each other, according to the Russian negotiating delegation.

Ukraine, in turn, proposed a direct meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russia's Vladimir Putin.

- The number one priority is to organize a meeting between the leaders, the presidents, in the presence of (US President Donald) Trump and (Turkey's Recep Tayyip) Erdogan, said Ukraine's chief negotiator Rustem Umerov.

Kyiv proposes that the meeting be held at the end of August.

"End the war"

Prior to the meeting, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan urged both sides to end the "bloody war" as soon as possible.

- Our goal is to end the bloody war, which has an extremely high cost, as soon as possible ... The ultimate goal is a ceasefire that leads to peace, said Fidan when he opened the meeting.

But the meeting lasted only about 40 minutes. Even before the talks began, expectations were low.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hoped that the parties would discuss the release of prisoners and the abduction of Ukrainian children. The Ukrainian leader also hoped that they would discuss a future meeting between him and Putin.

The Kremlin, on the other hand, said on Tuesday that it does not expect any "miraculous breakthroughs." The countries have "diametrically opposite" positions and an agreement on a ceasefire is very far away.

Long way to go before meeting

In talks in Istanbul last month, Russia presented a list of tough demands, including that Ukraine should cede more territory and reject all forms of Western military support. Ukraine dismissed the demands as unacceptable.

Moscow has said that "much work" remains to be done before any discussions can even be held about a possible meeting between Putin and Zelensky, who last met in 2019.

The two countries met earlier for peace talks in May and June this year, but only agreed on an exchange of prisoners of war.
