The controversial decision in the Supreme Court established that "the terms 'woman' and 'sex' in the equality law refer to a biological woman". A woman is, according to the verdict, a person who was born as a girl.
The extensive demonstrations were sharply critical of the verdict. "Trans women are women!" and "Trans rights are human rights", it was written, among other things, on banners at the protests in Parliament Square in London.
My greatest fear is that extremists will feel strengthened by the verdict, said Eevee Zayas to the news agency AFP.
Also in Edinburgh, Scotland, where the legal dispute leading up to the Supreme Court verdict originated, protests were held on Saturday.
The dispute has been between the women's rights group For women Scotland (FWS) and the Scottish government. The verdict means in practice that a trans person with a certificate stating they are a woman will not be considered a woman.
