According to the British Labour government, the reform is being implemented to create more justice for 16- and 17-year-olds. The change is part of a comprehensive package being presented to get more people to vote. The package also includes that voters should be able to identify themselves with bank and veteran cards when voting.

According to The Guardian, the government will also introduce stricter rules to protect the elections from foreign political influence.
