The announcement came from the spokesperson for Uganda's military on Sunday, who said that the German ambassador in Kampala, Mathias Schauer, according to "reliable intelligence" was involved in subversive activities in Uganda.

As early as Friday, the spokesperson Chris Magezi accused European diplomatic missions on the X platform of supporting "negative treasonous groups" that resist Uganda's regime.

Presidential elections are likely to be held in the next seven months, and human rights groups say that crackdowns on opposition have increased recently.

The incumbent president Yoweri Museveni has promoted his son Muhoozi Kainerugaba as a successor. Kainerugaba is currently the army chief.

It is unclear what the decision to suspend military cooperation for the time being means in practice. Uganda mainly imports machinery and chemical products from Germany. The German embassy in Kampala has not commented on the decision.
