The eye of the storm passed just south of the city on Sunday with a wind speed of up to 234 kilometers per hour, according to Hong Kong's meteorological authority, which issued their highest weather warning during the day. The warning was however downgraded later in the day as the typhoon moved away from the city, writes SCMP.
According to the newspaper, about 33 people have been injured and several hundred people have sought shelter in shelters. At 20:00 local time on Sunday, over 700 trees had fallen down around the city, some of which led to closed roads and damaged vehicles.
During the hours when the bad weather was at its worst, all public transport was cancelled, but has since gradually resumed. At the same time, 500 flights were cancelled and left thousands of passengers stranded at Hong Kong's airport.
On Saturday, the bad weather passed the Philippines and Taiwan and is expected to reach Vietnam later in the week.
