Turkey has applied for membership in the Brics alliance, according to sources for the news agency Bloomberg. The information has not yet been confirmed by the Turkish government or by any other member country.
According to Bloomberg's sources, the application was submitted a couple of months ago.
Of course, we would like to become members of Brics. We'll see how it goes this year, said Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan during a visit to China in early June, according to South China Morning Post.
Brics currently consists of nine member countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Iran. Together, Brics account for 28 percent of the world's economy, according to the Foreign Policy Institute.
