"You can't have guns. You can't go in there with guns," President Donald Trump said. His comment about the shooting death of Alex Pretti puts him in a difficult position with the powerful US gun lobby and his own party.

American citizen Pretti was shot and killed by federal border police during a protest in Minneapolis over the weekend. The incident sparked strong reactions, and officials in the Trump administration initially said that Pretti, who had a license and was carrying a holstered gun, was a suspected murderer.

When Trump was asked if he agreed with this, he said no, but added, "you can’t go in there" with weapons.

This has prompted angry reactions from several Republican members of Congress, as well as from the country's powerful gun organizations. The right to bear arms is constitutionally protected in the United States.

Corrected: In a previous version there was an incorrect description of who shot Pretti.
