Trump's first budget proposal since returning to the White House involves cuts of 163 billion dollars, or nearly 23 percent, of the state's expenditures in the non-defense area.

The US defense expenditures are to increase by 13 percent to over 1,000 billion dollars, and the allocation to domestic security is increased by nearly 65 percent compared to this year, according to the budget proposal.

Much is about cutting in various programs and investments in equality, diversity, and climate. But major cuts are also in the healthcare area and within education.

The budget formalizes the closure of the aid agency USAID) and the reduction of the country's aid by around 90 percent.

Against "cultural Marxism"

Many of the austerity measures can be traced to billionaire Elon Musk's efficiency organization Doge's activities.

This is a fairly historic attempt to get to grips with bureaucracy. It is woke and it is a waste, says an official at the White House budget department in a briefing for journalists behind closed doors.

According to a written compilation from the White House, it is about "eliminating radical gender and race ideologies that poison Americans' minds" and combating "cultural Marxism."

House Speaker, Republican Mike Johnson, says the plan shows fiscal discipline in view of the country's problems with persistent high budget deficits.

President Trump's plan ensures that every spent federal tax dollar is beneficial to the American people, not an inflated bureaucracy or partisan symbol projects, he says.

The budget presented on Friday contains no forecast for the state's borrowing.

Furious Schumer

The Senate Minority Leader, Democrat Chuck Schumer, is furious and says that Democrats will "fight this heartless budget with everything we have".

Trump's days of pretending to be a populist are over. His policy is nothing less than an attack on hardworking Americans, he says in a statement.

The White House budget proposal should be seen as a framework with wishes that will later this year result in full-fledged legislative proposals for voting on. The handling in Congress usually leads to an irritated process of compromises and changes to the original proposals.
