According to his post on Truth Social, he has sent the appeal as a letter to all NATO countries - "and the world". He demands that oil imports cease, and that NATO countries follow his line and impose the same sanctions as the USA.
"As you know, NATO's commitment to winning has been far from 100 percent and some countries' imports of Russian oil are shocking! It weakens the negotiating position against Russia significantly", writes Trump.
The war in Ukraine will end "quickly" if NATO "does what I say", he continues in the post.
"If you don't, you're just wasting my time as well as the USA's time, energy and money."
Sanctions against China
Trump also wants NATO countries to impose massive tariffs on China, which he says has "a strong grip" on Russia.
"I believe that this plan, together with NATO, as a group, introducing 50- to 100-percent import tariffs on China, which will be removed when the war between Russia and Ukraine is over, will greatly contribute to stopping this deadly but absurd war."
The President also repeats his mantra that it's "not Trump's war", but that the responsibility lies with former President Joe Biden and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj. He does not mention Putin in his post.
"I'm just here to stop it", he writes.
Not the first time
Trump has several times threatened to impose new sanctions on Russia, most recently last week when Russia attacked Ukraine with what is described as the largest Russian drone swarm so far, according to AFP. But so far, he has not made the threats a reality, to Kyiv's frustration.
The Western world's imports from Russia have decreased significantly since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. But the taps have not been completely turned off.
In the first quarter of 2021, 29 percent of the EU's oil imports came from Russia, which was by far the largest single export country of the commodity to the union. Four years later, that figure is 2 percent, according to the EU's statistical office Eurostat.
On the other hand, a large part of the union's imports of, among other things, natural gas still comes from Russia.
