For Iran, the situation in Lebanon is the most fundamental issue of the agreement, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said earlier on Monday. Trump is playing it down.

"Iran is the big one, but we have a little prick out there that always rises up and that's Hezbollah," Trump said, according to the media at the G7 summit in France.

The move comes after Trump digitally signed the deal with Iran that is intended to pave the way for a "real" peace deal in the war. The agreement is also supposed to include a halt to fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Shiite militia Hezbollah in Lebanon - but it is unclear exactly how it is formulated or what demands it places on Israel.

"Too many are being killed"

Donald Trump claims he has a different idea about how to deal with Hezbollah: He says he has suggested to Israel that Syria's president, former jihadist rebel Ahmed al-Sharaa, take it on.

"If Israel can't do the job without killing everyone else, then he (al-Sharaa) will do the job," Trump said, according to AFP.

"Israel has been fighting Hezbollah for too long and too many people are being killed... I think they (Syria) are doing a better job."

The president adds that al-Sharaa does not like Hezbollah and that he is "not a Boy Scout."

That Lebanon is also included in the peace settlement between the US and Iran was a strict demand from Tehran, after there had been major disagreement about it in previous ceasefire agreements.

As Iran describes it, the agreement with the US means that Israel's occupation of southern Lebanon will end.

Vaguely worded

But meanwhile, the Lebanese news agency NNA reported shelling and drone attacks in the southern parts of the country.

The memorandum of understanding on Lebanon has not been shown, but there are reports that it is vaguely worded. According to Israeli media, Israel interprets it to mean that its actions in the country are not limited. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that forces will remain in the neighboring country "as long as necessary."

Donald Trump emphasizes that he is not satisfied with how Israel has acted:

"Bibi (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu) must be more responsible when it comes to Lebanon."
