Europe must unite and act forcefully to take control of its future in a troubled world. That is the message from Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is asking for more support in Ukraine's war against Russia.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy began his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos by referring to the film "Monday All Week Long" to describe how Ukraine is forced to relive the same situation as the war continues year after year.

This is how we are forced to live now, says Zelenskyy.

He continues to thank European allies for their support, but at the same time criticizes them for doing too little.

Europe loves to discuss the future but avoids taking actions here and now that could actually shape it, says Zelenskyy.

Europe must learn how to defend itself.

Europe needs strength

He raised the example of Greenland, saying everyone there is just "waiting for the US to calm down."

If you send 40 soldiers to Greenland - what signal does that send? What is the message to Putin, to China? And more importantly, to Denmark? Your closest ally.

(Donald Trump) says he loves Europe, but he won't listen to this kind of Europe.

He adds that a united Europe has the ability to be a significant power.

"Europe can and must be a global power. Not one that reacts belatedly, but one that defines the future," Zelenskyy says.

For that, Europe needs strength.

Joint European forces may be a better idea than leaning on NATO and relying on the United States to come to the rescue, Zelenskyy continues.

What if they don't?

"Positive" meeting with Trump

Before the speech, Zelenskyy met with US President Donald Trump.

Both describe the meeting as "good".

"Our teams are working almost daily. It's not easy. The documents aimed at ending this war are almost, almost ready, and that's really significant," Zelenskyy said.

"In dialogues with all presidents, it's about defending the interests of my country. These are dialogues that may not be easy, but today it was positive," Zelenskyy added in an interview on stage in Davos after his speech.

However, he said that Ukraine still lacks sufficient security guarantees from the United States.

Regarding Europe's support, Zelenskyy thanked European allies for freezing Russian assets, but regretted that there was no agreement to use the funds for Ukraine's defense.

He also criticized his Western allies for failing to stop imports of weapons parts from Russia or to halt Russian oil exports.

If Putin runs out of money, Europe will avoid war.
