The two leaders are in place at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, where Gaza is high on the agenda. Asked by a reporter when phase two of the ongoing ceasefire might begin, Trump replied:
"As soon as possible, but we must disarm Hamas," he said, adding that the meeting with Netanyahu will mainly revolve around five issues, of which Gaza is one.
The comment comes just hours after Hamas once again rejected the disarmament demand.
"Our people are defending themselves and will not give up their weapons as long as the occupation persists," said Abu Obeida in a video statement, newly appointed spokesman for Hamas' armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades.
The new spokesperson has taken the same name as his predecessor, whose death was confirmed by Hamas earlier on Monday.
According to sources, parts of Trump's staff are concerned that both Hamas and Israel are delaying the start of phase two of the ceasefire, which under the current plan would include an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and the disarmament of Hamas - something the terrorist movement has repeatedly rejected.
