Gaza was high on the agenda when the two met at Trump's Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago on Monday evening Swedish time. The most glaring issue at the moment concerns the process of starting the second phase of the ceasefire.
"As soon as possible, but we have to disarm Hamas," Trump said when asked when phase two - which also includes an Israeli withdrawal - could begin.
"Hell awaits"
When the American president was asked a follow-up question after the meeting about how long the terrorist movement would be given to disarm, Trump replied, "A very short period of time," and continued:
But if they don't lay down their weapons - as they have agreed to do - then hell awaits them.
The comments come just hours after Hamas once again rejected the disarmament demand.
“Our people are defending themselves and will not give up their weapons as long as the occupation persists,” said a video statement from Abu Obeida, newly appointed spokesman for Hamas’s armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades.
No views on Israel
The new spokesperson has taken the same name as his predecessor, whose death was confirmed by Hamas earlier on Monday.
According to sources, there is concern in parts of Trump's staff that both Hamas and Israel are delaying the process of initiating phase two of the ceasefire, which according to the current plan includes both Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and the disarmament of Hamas - something the terrorist movement has repeatedly rejected.
Since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect in October, hundreds of Palestinians - among them many women and children - have been killed in Israeli attacks, leading to criticism of Netanyahu's government.
But on this point, President Trump has nothing to complain about.
"I have no views on anything that Israel does," he said.
