The agreement with Iran is no longer valid "as I see it," says Donald Trump during the ongoing NATO summit in Ankara.

The move comes after renewed attacks in the Persian Gulf. The US says it has attacked around 80 military targets in Iran, which has responded with attacks on about the same number of US targets in Bahrain and Kuwait.

According to the US, the attacks were prompted by Iranian attacks on three merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran instead holds the US responsible for the escalation and, in a statement, accuses Washington of violating the countries' agreement.

Trump calls the Iranian leadership “scum” and “sick people” whom he wants nothing to do with.

"As far as I'm concerned, negotiating with them is just a waste of time. They are liars," he says in the Turkish capital.

Immediately after Trump's announcement, oil prices rose.

However, the president says he is allowing his negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to continue talking to the Iranian side.

Iran and the United States agreed in June on a so-called Memorandum of Understanding, which stipulated that the parties would refrain from attacks for 60 days and in the meantime negotiate a lasting peace agreement.
