Donald Trump says the situation in Minneapolis should be “stepped down a little.” The remark is the latest sign that the president and his administration have changed tack after recent shootings in the city.

Trump's comment comes in an interview with Fox News in Iowa, where he is scheduled to give a speech about the US economy on Tuesday evening.

"I don't think it's about a withdrawal but a change," he continues.

The president also says that Border Patrol Chief Greg Bovino, who, after being the face of the controversial federal operation in Minneapolis, has now been forced to leave the city, is a "special figure."

Bovino is very good, but he is a special figure. That can be good in some situations. Maybe it was not good in this case.

On Saturday, 37-year-old Alex Pretti was shot and killed by federal Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis. Analysis shows Pretti approached the officers with a cell phone in his hand. There is no indication that he attempted to use the weapon he was carrying.

Earlier in January, a mother of three, Renee Nicole Good, 37, was shot and killed in her car by an ICE agent in the same city.

These events have prompted strong reactions in Minneapolis and across the United States.
