"We'll make it public next week, I think," Trump said at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, and continued:
"It will be a person who, in my opinion, will do a good job. The Fed's interest rate is too high, unacceptably high."
Current Fed Chair Jerome Powell's term ends in May. He and the central bank are under intense pressure and repeated attacks from Trump, who wants to see more and deeper rate cuts.
Powell has also been threatened with prosecution, which he says is based on Trump's dissatisfaction.
Kevin Warsh, a former Fed governor, is considered a leading candidate in preliminary talks to become the new Fed chair.
