USA's President Donald Trump says that he can imagine going to Turkey on Thursday to join a meeting between Ukraine and Russia. This is welcomed by Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyj – but from Russia's Vladimir Putin it is silent.

I'm considering flying there, says Trump at a press conference at the White House, according to AFP.

The President adds:

I don't know where I'll be on Thursday, I have so many meetings. It's possible, if I believe things can happen.

The statement comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj said he was ready to personally meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Turkey.

Rejected ceasefire

Direct talks in Turkey were something Putin proposed over the weekend after rejecting Ukraine's and its allies' call for an unconditional ceasefire of at least 30 days.

Trump is traveling to the Middle East on Monday to visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has offered to host a Russian-Ukrainian top-level meeting.

Don't underestimate Thursday in Turkey, President Erdogan is a fantastic host, says Trump.

Trump also says he believes both Zelenskyj and Putin will be present at the meeting. On a question about whether the US will impose new sanctions on Russia if Putin rejects a ceasefire, he responds:

I have a feeling they will come to an agreement. I have a feeling.

"Window of opportunities"

Zelenskyj welcomes Trump's presence in Istanbul.

"Of course, all of us in Ukraine will appreciate if President Trump could be with us during the meeting", he writes on X.

Erdogan says he has spoken by phone with Zelenskyj and in a statement urges the parties not to let "this opportunity go lost". According to Erdogan, "a new window of opportunities has opened after the latest contacts".

At the same time, Zelenskyj notes on Monday evening that there is no response from the Russian side.

"Russian artillery fire and Russian attacks continue. Moscow has been silent all day regarding the proposal for a direct meeting. A very strange silence", he writes.

It is unclear how Thursday's announced meeting in Turkey will go. Likewise, who will ultimately attend.
