Trump and Zelensky Meet in Rome for Productive Talks

A "symbolic" meeting that "can become historic". This is how Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj describes the conversation with his American colleague Donald Trump at the Pope's funeral in Rome.

"A good meeting. We discussed a lot individually", comments Zelenskyj on X.

The two leaders met when they honored the late Pope Francis at his coffin in St. Peter's Basilica, before the funeral ceremony.

"President Trump and President Zelenskyj met privately today and had a very productive discussion", says White House communications chief Steven Cheung according to AFP in a statement.

Shortly after 1 pm, it was announced that Trump had left Rome after a "short meeting" with Zelenskyj.

Hoping for results

Images show the two leaders sitting opposite each other in a corner of St. Peter's Basilica, just before the pope's funeral.

"I hope we achieve results around everything we went through. To protect our people's lives. Fully and unconditionally ceasefire", writes Zelenskyj on X.

Further images showed Trump and Zelenskyj in conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

This was the first time Trump and Zelenskyj met since a notable and disrupted meeting about, among other things, rare earth metals at the White House in February.

Near agreement?

Before Trump traveled to Italy, he commented on the efforts to end the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine on his platform Truth Social.

"A good day regarding talks and meetings with Russia and Ukraine. They are very close to an agreement and the two sides should now meet at a very high level to 'end it'. Most of the major points are agreed upon", wrote Trump.

The statement came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj commented on Trump's statement about "(the Russian-annexed) Crimea remaining Russian".

I agree with President Trump that we currently do not have enough weapons to regain control over the Crimean Peninsula by military means, said Zelenskyj to reporters in Kyiv on Friday, according to Ukrainian Interfax.

Full ceasefire?

Zelenskyj also said on Friday that it is possible to pressure Russia diplomatically, and that Kyiv is willing to discuss "territorial issues" but only on the condition that Russia agrees to a full ceasefire. The American proposal for an agreement has been criticized for being very beneficial to Moscow.

Ukraine's Crimea was annexed by Russia in violation of international law in 2014, after Russian forces occupied the territory the same year. Russia's full-scale war of aggression in Ukraine began over three years ago.
