The meeting began at 18:00 on Monday, Swedish time, with Trump, together with the leaders of Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, signing a declaration guaranteeing the Gaza agreement, which aims to end the two-year war.
From the stage, Trump poured flattery over the meeting participants.
There is more money and power behind us than anyone has seen before, he says.
Egypt's President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi, who is hosting the meeting together with Trump, says that Egypt and the USA will lead the work on laying the foundation for Gaza's reconstruction and promises a conference in Egypt in the near future. The ceasefire agreement "paves the way for a two-state solution", he continues.
Second phase
The ceasefire between Hamas and Israel in Gaza was announced on Friday, negotiated with the help of Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the USA.
The first phase of the agreement meant that Hamas would release all the remaining hostages – 20 alive and the remains of 28 deceased – within 72 hours. In exchange, Israel would release nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.
After the prisoner exchange was carried out on Monday, although not all the remains of the hostages were handed over, Trump states that the second phase of the USA's peace plan is now underway. Among the key issues are the disarmament of Hamas, a new government in Gaza, and Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
The summit in Sharm el-Sheikh is attended by leaders from over 20 countries, including France, Iraq, Norway, Qatar, the United Kingdom, and Turkey. The Palestinian President on the West Bank, Mahmud Abbas, is also in attendance. According to the news agency AFP, the meeting between Trump and Abbas is the first in eight years.
Neither Hamas nor Israel is participating.
Came from Israel
Donald Trump landed in Sharm el-Sheikh on Monday afternoon after a lightning visit to Israel, where he, among other things, spoke in parliament.
When Egypt's President al-Sisi received him, he praised Trump as the only one who could end the war – "the only one capable of bringing peace to our region".
Trump responded by praising the Egyptian President for having played a key role in the negotiations with the extremist group Hamas.
Just after 20:00, more than two hours after the meeting began, Trump flew back to Washington.
