The trial in Turkey was supposed to start on Thursday, but when it began an hour late, it was postponed again after just a couple of minutes.

"If this were a system that relied on truth, it would have been a different matter. But here they have built the entire prosecution on lies. It is impossible not to be worried," Medin tells his own newspaper.

Turkey has requested that Medin be heard via video link from Sweden during the trial, but the Swedish government has refused. The court believes this makes it impossible to reach a verdict.

“The ball is in the government’s court”

This risks becoming a kind of catch-22 for Joakim, says EU parliamentarian Jonas Sjöstedt (V), who is following the negotiations on site, to TT.

Swedish authorities do not see this as a reasonable legal process and do not want to contribute to something that violates all fundamental legal principles.

Sjöstedt calls the whole thing a political process that the Swedish government can stop with more pressure on Turkey.

Now the ball is in the court of the government, which should make it clear to Turkey that now you can stop this, now you can shut this down.

Negotiations in October

According to Dagens ETC, it was announced during the hearing that the prosecution had produced an expert report on Medin's computer and phone that were seized when he was arrested. A new hearing date was then set for October 1.

"By continuing to postpone a decision, Turkish authorities are signaling that they are keeping an eye on journalists covering the country," said Johan Taubert, CEO of Tidningsutgivarna, in a statement.

Medin was arrested during a reporting trip to Turkey in 2025 and released after 51 days in prison. He is charged with participating in a terrorist organization and spreading terrorist propaganda and is following the trial from Sweden. Medin does not yet know exactly what the charges are as he has not seen the documents in the case. The trial has been postponed twice before.
