Brennan Johnson scored the only goal of the match at San Mamés Stadium in the Basque Country after tapping in 1–0 in the 42nd minute. Manchester United's goalkeeper André Onana and defender Luke Shaw both failed to clear the ball in connection with the goal.

I can't describe the sensation right now, said the 23-year-old Welsh national team striker, and continues:

To get the task done today is such a special sensation.

Tottenham thus won the Europa League, previously the Uefa Cup, for the third time and for the first time since the tournament changed its name before the 2009-2010 season.

The title is "Spurs"' first since the team won the English League Cup in 2007-2008. In European games, it was the London team's first title in 41 years, since the victory in the then Uefa Cup in 1983-1984.

We just needed to win the cup. This club deserves cups. It's such a good club, says Brennan Johnson.

Injured Tottenham Swedes Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Bergvall were both outside the team in Wednesday's victory, but have contributed along the way to the historic title.

Premier League rival Manchester United was not entirely without chances in the match, not least in the end when Luke Shaw had a header that Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario saved.

Earlier in the half, Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven had saved a ball on the goal line with a clever kick.

Victor Nilsson Lindelöf sat on United's bench throughout the match.
