The audience called for former national team captain Janne Andersson after Sweden's football men lost another match in the World Championship qualifying round. After 0–2 against Switzerland at Strawberry arena, the first place, the only one that definitely gives a place in the World Championship next year, is in practice blown away for the Swedish part.
I understand the fans, because they want to see results, they want us to win matches. Football is very much about emotions, everything is black or white. That's what we have to deal with, and the only way we can do it is by winning matches, says Sweden's national team captain Jon Dahl Tomasson to Viaplay.
Later, at the press conference, he was asked if he is the right man to continue leading the national team.
Absolutely.
Allowed to have emotions
What do you say about the reactions from the audience?
Supporters are allowed to have emotions because they care so much. We are all disappointed, but you are not the best in the world when you win and not the worst in the world when you lose.
He admits that the battle for a direct place in the World Championship 2026 is lost.
Now the first place is gone. It's a blow in the face, of course, that we only have one point so far, but it's not a knockout. I think we can make it to the World Championship, says Tomasson.
We didn't make a perfect match tonight, but we definitely created enough chances to win. That's my spontaneous feeling, but it's clear that I'm disappointed.
The chance is not gone
Sweden is the table bottom with only one point in three matches. On Monday, they will meet Kosovo, second with four points, at Gamla Ullevi.
We can still reach the playoffs and win them. We can be second after the next match. It's a long way left, but the chance is definitely not gone.
A normal day we get a better result with the chances we create, but it's tough right now.
One point in three matches. What speaks for more?
I see a team that believes in what we do, that has enormous potential, but makes mistakes.
