Tomasson on Gyökeres: "He's a bulldozer"

Jon Dahl Tomasson scored goals as a player and is not easily impressed. But when he talks about Viktor Gyökeres, it shines in the eyes of the national team's captain. He has the whole package. He is a bulldozer, strong as hell. He is a top-class finisher, says the Dane.

The goalless goal production is currently one of the biggest talking points in football – and "JDT" is happy to talk a lot about the 26-year-old.

He's brilliant, isn't he? He scored three goals on Tuesday, a few days earlier he scored four. I think he's scored 23 goals in 16 matches. If you add his four goals and four assists for Sweden, he's suddenly up to 27 goals. It's incredible, says Tomasson.

He himself was a striker and finisher at the highest international level. He scored 180 goals in 450 club matches. For Denmark, he scored 52 goals in 112 internationals.

"Lacks nothing"

What do you think Viktor Gyökeres can still develop?

Good question. If we talk about his qualities first... He's an incredible goal-scorer, he can create spaces and chances for his teammates, his runs behind the defense are excellent and among the best in the world.

It's hard to say what he can add to his game, right now he has the whole package. He's a bulldozer, strong as hell. I can't say he lacks anything.

In the spring of 2023, "JDT" and Gyökeres were both active in the English second division, Tomasson as coach in Blackburn, Gyökeres in Coventry. A year and a half later, the Swede is one of Europe's hottest strikers.

Could you foresee that when you were in Blackburn?

He did well even then. He scored many goals in Coventry and if you can do it in that league, you can do it in many others.

The stars are aligned

Tomasson was very pleased with the steps the national team took during the previous gathering.

In the last two internationals, we probably made our best offensive performances. We still have things to develop and it's important that we take the next step on our journey, he says.

Then Alexander Isak was still missing against Slovakia and Estonia. Barely a month later, the stars are aligned for the Dane and the national team. For the first time, Isak, Gyökeres, and Dejan Kulusevski come to the national team injury-free and in top form.

Isak is back and has scored three goals, "Kulo" is killing it in the entire Premier League from his midfield position. And then we have Yasin Ayari, who played for Brighton against a Liverpool that is one of the world's top teams. It's impressive.

+ The group stage of the Nations League concludes for Sweden with home matches against Slovakia (November 16) and Azerbaijan (November 19).

+ After four rounds, Sweden tops the group ahead of Slovakia. Both have ten points, but Sweden has a better goal difference (11–3 to 8–3).

+ If Sweden wins against Slovakia, the group victory is clear regardless of how it goes in the sixth and final round, since head-to-head matches count. The meeting in Bratislava in October ended 2–2.

+ Sweden is at least second in the group, a placement that gives a qualifying match against a third-place team in the B division.

+ Group victory gives more than just direct promotion to the B division, it can also give an extra qualifying chance for the 2026 World Championship.

+ The national team gathers on Monday in Marbella, Spain. There, they will prepare until Thursday for Saturday's match against Slovakia.
