Social workers, dentists, veterinarians and healthcare professions in general are examples of jobs where there will be a staffing shortage in five years, according to the academic union Saco's annual review of future job prospects.

"We also see that officers have had good job opportunities for several years," says Saco's chairwoman Sofia Rydgren Stale.

Two-thirds

Of the 60 professions analyzed that normally require a university education, approximately two-thirds are assessed to have little competition for the jobs, meaning good chances of employment or of running your own business.

"Academic education is still a very good investment for the future. It looks bright," says Rydgren Stale.

But this does not apply to all university professions. A surplus is expected among architects, as well as among communications and various cultural professions.

What should we think then? Some university professions have salary levels that make the education barely worth it. And should personal interest give way to a job market that looks weak?

"The important thing is that you make a conscious and well-thought-out choice. You need to choose with both your heart and your brain," says Sofia Rydgren Stale.

Makes work faster

In many cases, the education leads to a completely different profession than the one you had in mind. Should you choose a broad or narrow one?

"Professional training where you clearly become a veterinarian or a dentist, for example. That way you can enter the job market faster. Broader training may provide more opportunities, but sometimes it can take a little longer to establish yourself in the job market," she says.

Employer organizations have pointed out in their own reports that unemployment among graduates is higher than it has been in a long time and that companies are increasingly looking for plumbers and other skilled workers, for example. They say the education system needs to be reviewed so that the need for in-demand skills is given greater priority.

"I think it's a bit unfortunate that different types of education are pitted against each other. We will all be needed," says Rydgren Stale about that criticism.
