Recently, tech companies Snap, Meta, Tiktok, and Google promised the Nordic justice ministers at a meeting to more closely monitor and remove gang-related violence from their platforms. The reason was to prevent young people from being recruited into criminal networks.
Now, a clip allegedly - but not confirmed by the police - showing the shooting of a rapper in a garage in Norrköping has spread on several social media platforms.
"It's totally disrespectful to crime victims and their relatives, and it's not images that our children should have to see when they open their mobile phones. I assume that the platforms where such content is spreading will do everything to immediately remove it", says Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer (M) in a written comment to TT.
Strömmer further says that he expects the major tech companies "to go from words to action and work much more actively with self-cleaning in their channels".
"I and my Nordic justice minister colleagues have also informed the platforms that further legislation may become relevant if they do not step forward and do the job".
A search away
In the video that is now spreading, a shooter fires a series of shots that echo in the garage against a person who is heard begging for their life.
Both on Tiktok and Instagram, versions of the film were just a search away shortly after lunch on Friday.
Lukasz Lindell, communications manager for Tiktok in the Nordic region, says that the company has been working since early morning to remove all versions of the video.
It's such a terrible event, and awful that this act has occurred. Our focus is to ensure that this video is not available on our platform, he says.
Remixed in different ways
According to Lindell, many people want to upload the film again and are trying to circumvent Tiktok's network by remixing it in different ways.
We scan and remove as soon as we see something and set up proactive filters. We absolutely do not want this video to spread.
How could the film be uploaded in the first place?
I have no information about that, I haven't seen that it has been published on our platform in its original format.
