Myanmar's military junta pardons around 6,000 prisoners as part of the celebrations to mark the country's 77th year as an independent nation after being part of the British colonial empire.
It is still unclear whether the amnesty includes any of the thousands of political prisoners who have been imprisoned for resisting the repressive junta, which seized power again in February 2021.
Among the prisoners being released are 5,864 from Myanmar, while 180 are foreign nationals who will be deported, announces the military's top leader Min Aung Hlaing on state TV on Saturday.
