"Blue Lights", which is shown in Sweden on TV4 and Britbox, is set in Belfast, where viewers in the first season met three police recruits - among them Grace, played by Sian Brooke.
The series has continued to follow them as they try to tackle crime in the city, while also depicting their private lives. And while there is no shortage of action scenes during the hunt for the city's drug mafia, it also shows how the police take on minor crimes - and help homeless and confused elderly people.
The series shows how police officers make connections, how you meet the same faces every day, how it gets personal. You get a look behind the scenes. For me, this job has not only changed my view of police work, but also of life in general, how to judge what is right or wrong.
"The Troubles"
Even though it has been many years since the bloody conflict between Protestants and Catholics, “The Troubles,” ended, tensions still remain – even among the gangs that sell drugs.
The writers grew up in Belfast during the Troubles. They were journalists, they saw it and experienced it. And what happened then still affects the city, even though Belfast is now a cosmopolitan city, says Sian Brooke.
According to her, Belfast residents appreciate that the series addresses this.
There is a hangover from that time, the series provides new opportunities for discussion and dialogue.
After the New Year, they start filming season four and Sian Brooke hopes for more seasons, “I enjoy being employed,” she notes. How would she react if she found out that the writing team was planning to kill Grace?
I would be devastated. At the same time, you could say I would go out with a bang.
“An honor”
Swedish TV viewers love British police series like "Line of Duty", "Happy Valley" and now "Blue Lights".
It's an honor that our series is mentioned in that context. Then I counter by saying how much we admire Scandinavian series. You're doing really well, says Sian Brooke.
